Reality is the only context we have available to experience life, acquire knowledge, maintain sanity, alleviate suffering, and attain well-being. There’s only one perceivable world that could accommodate all individual perspectives and warrant the words ‘reality’ and ‘truth’. Reality’s the only frame of reference that could validate any opinion, belief, conjecture, or theory. Reality provides the only ongoing actuality we could be aware of, mentally align with, and understand — thus justifying consciousness. Only the reality of our behavior and its consequences could prove our compatibility with the world that created us and assure our continuing existence. Reality offers our only opportunity to perhaps one day realize the full potential of human life.
Because it’s the whole and complete setting of our existence, reality’s the best thing we’ve got going. Existentially, we’ve no better friend. And as all conditions of existence, from the most favorable to the least, provide such valuable information about how to exist, we’ve all the reasons in the universe to be grateful for reality.
Therefore, as co-inhabitants of this miraculous and challenging world, we agree to agree with reality. We may disagree with each other about anything, but we consent to reality as the final word on everything. We favor actuality over our mind’s version of the world and strive to inform the latter via the former. Understanding that this is our only means and opportunity, we seek the experiential wisdom to be found in all conditions of life, and strive to follow reality’s more pointed advice: That conflict and suffering be transformed into harmony and well-being; that we be more attentive and reverent with the world; and with each other more kind, thoughtful, honest, forgiving, generous, and appreciative of all that we share. Anticipating the betterment of humanity latent in all of us, but to be realized as future humans, we volunteer today as friends of reality, bonded in mutual affection with all that is and could be.
